Our Spanish friends are angry! They have organised a huge protest in Madrid on 21st September. They want a national law to protect animals in Spain.
They want severe penalties for people found guilty of maltreating animals. They want a ban on financial aid from the State for spectacles and events involving the maltreatment of animals, such as bull fights and greyhound racing.

I’ve been in correspondence with Gareth Thomas, International Project Manager for RSPCA International, on the subject of the abandonment of dogs and cats in Spain, particularly with regard to galgos in my own case.
He has been extremely helpful with explaining the Society’s stand on this subject, and this is what he has to say:
‘RSPCA International focusses its aid and training on strenghtening local partners’ work to improve animal welfare, such as projects to improve responsible pet ownership, increase neutering and introduce animal welfare education into schools.
Each Spanish region has its own legislation for animal protection, some even have none. Read what the Bright Eyes Society says.
Bright Eyes Society also has this suggestion for denouncing cruelty in Spain.

Interesting read on EU legislation.

This is Eros. Look long at his gentle trusting smiling face. He’s not even a year old, just a baby. He’s just been stolen by the galguerros from the sanctuary of the refuge trying to rehome him. What expression of fear and terror must be on his face now.
Help the campaigns to wipe out this cruelty, wipe out hunting with galgos, control their breeding, put an end to horrors of their murder.
Join my campaigns, write to the Spanish Prime Minister, email the Minister of the Environment, sign all the petitions! If you’ve already done it, do it again!
August has arrived, soon it will be September, and the beginning of the hunting season in Spain. Hundreds of galgos remain in refuges at the moment, rescued by brave over-worked volunteers.
But most of the refuges are unmanned at night. And the galgos are now in a vulnerable position – in danger of being stolen and finding themselves back in the hell of the last hunting season.
Passion Levriers report several galgos which have already been stolen from a refuge before they could be removed by the association.
One cannot begin to imagine the hell they will suffer yet again, after having found sanctuary.
Why we love a galgo. This video shows some of the things which happen to them at the end of the hunting season at the end of January.
Don’t switch off. Don’t be too afraid of watching it, it is not too horrific, The pictures say a lot to explain the origins of the galgo, and follows the story through. And it shows just how much love these fantastic dogs can give, even though they might suffer so much hardship.
Please watch, and pass the word on, about the plight of the Galgos
Maria Daines and Paul Killington were invited into the BBC Radio Cambridge studio to talk to Sue Marchant about how they use their wonderful musical talents to help all animals and also to promote the release of Racing to Death and try to raise awareness and highlight greyhound ‘Remembrance Weekend’
