  • Galga Blanquita – safe now with Scooby

    Cobie white galga 3 400
From Cobie at Scooby Residencia Valladolid.

‘For 13 years she was in the hands of her galguero and then he decided to leave her in the perrera provincial of Valladolid. Scooby has taken her out as soon as we heard about it. He should have done it at least 10 years earlier…now this sweet and quiet girl doesn’t want anything else but a warm home with a loving family and a soft bed where she can enjoy the years she has left to live, and finally learn what a happy dog’s life really is! If you think you could give her that chance please get in touch.’

  • Podenco Friends – rescuing hounds in the terrible storms

    Bev galga puppies 400 12 2019
From Bev Farmer. I had the pleasure of meeting her friend Janette when I visited Bev a few years ago. This is what happened during one of the worst storms to hit Andalucia. Sadly storms are still forecast to hit the region.

‘Just before the big storms hit us in Spain Janette Lopez was contacted by a local perrera 7 galgos and a Podenco had been handed in by a Galguero and could she help .. Her rescue is mainly local adoptions of family type dogs and she doesn’t get much interest in sighthounds. So she asked me if I could team up with her and help with them .. No problem Janette ….

Then a couple of days later I was asked if we could help with a galga who had just given birth in a disused finca surround by rubbish. 3 pups had already died and it was a matter of urgency to get them to safety .. I had no space here to take them so Janette took them. At the time it seemed all manageable, 15 dogs. Then disaster struck and one of the worst Gota Frias recorded in the region hit .. Janette’s rescue was badly flooded and a lot of damage. On top of that she took in 27 dogs displaced because of the storms plus a couple of goats and to date only a couple of people have come forward to claim them.

  • El Amigo Fiel Cordoba – another association helping galgos and podencos

Here’s another rescue and rehoming association to add to my list. Since I started my involvement with the galgos and podencos and writing my blogs to publicise their plight, I am delighted in the increase in rescue associations now involved with helping these wonderful but abused hounds.

  • Complementary Therapies to Help Your Dog’s Arthritis Pain

There are many wonderful complementary treatments for dogs with OA. None will cure or heal the arthritic joint, but a combination of treatments can very well restore vitality and decrease discomfort, making a happy walk in the park a reality once again.

    1. Omega-3 fatty acids, glucosamine and chondroitin, and avocado and soybean unsaponifiables (ASU) can all work to slow joint degeneration. The combination of these over several months can improve function and decrease pain. Can also be used as preventive.

    2. Turmeric and curcumin together are a potent anti-inflammatory.

The sacrifice of dogs when they are not used for hunting continues to be an extended practice in some areas of Spain. An example of this is the investigation being carried out by the Civil Guard in Tierra de Barros (Badajoz), which has opened proceedings against 12 residents of the region for the killing of 46 dogs .

The Benemérita, who has brought the proceedings brought to justice, accuses these people of a crime of animal abuse. Among those investigated, there is a veterinary doctor from the region of La Paz, who is also charged with a crime of documentary falsification, as reported by the Civil Guard .

First inquiries – The case was uncovered with the finding of a dog corpse next to a bag of bones

  • Dogs with dementia – canine cognitive disorder

I recently wrote about my elderley (14 years) galga developing dementia after a stroke a year ago. Here’s an article in the Whole Dog Journal about the problem, with links to a book if you are interested in learning more.

‘Here’s how to love and care for a dog with dementia

Recognize the signs of dementia earlier so you can take steps to slow the process.
Is your dog pacing in circles, barking for no apparent reason, or forgetting his housetraining? Is he starting to get stuck in corners, stare at walls, or act a little distant? These and other behavioral changes may indicate that your dog is developing canine cognitive dysfunction (CCD), a disease akin to Alzheimer’s.

It’s been estimated that more than 14% of pet dogs over the age of 8 show some symptoms of age-related cognitive dysfunction – and a whopping 68% of dogs aged 15 to 16 years have symptoms of cognitive impairment. Some pet owners might joke about “doggie Alzheimer’s,” but this degenerative brain disease is a real thing.

  • More young galgos rescued by Protectora Scooby

    Scooby 4 galgos 400 1 12 2019
‘We’ve just brought four new galgas from the municipal dog pound of Valladolid. Meet Arena, Lluvia, Risca and Reina. They are young, between 8 months and 3 years old. Although handed over by the galguero following the required procedures, which is obviously better then throwing them over the fence or leaving them to their fate somewhere, they still add to the number of abandoned dogs. They’re getting familiar with their new place and their new friends, and besides being beautiful they’re lovely, affectionate dogs. It goes without saying that they are all looking for a family who will love and look after them.’

  • Protectora Scooby – 3 galgo pups thrown over the wall!

    Scooby 3 pups 400 22 11 2019
    From Cobie at Protectora Scooby.

22/11/2019 – 2 Hours ago, 3 galgopups from some 4 months young were thrown over the wall from the big playfield at the Scooby residencia. They are of course terrified, it´s very dark there and impossible to catch them now so they will have to spend the dark and cold night outside. They have access to an empty kennel where I´ve put water, food and blankets and can only hope they will find it…It is too dark to make pictures of them but tomorrow I will if they are still there which of course I hope with all my heart because normally the dogs can´t escape from there. I´ve called the police and they will come here tomorrow so at least they know that these things are happening here! I hate these galgueros who do this so much, I´m ready to kill a few of them!!

    Update 28/11/2918 –
