  • Las Palma, Canary Islands – man shoots dog dead with homemade weapon

FECAPAP (Canaria Federation of associations protective of animals and plants), in the Canary Islands, recently condemned the killing of a dog by a home made weapon. Earlier this week, a resident of Mazo, La Palma, killed his dog by shooting it with an illegally owned homemade firearm made of two cylindrical tubes, using 16 cartridges! The man was arrested by the Guardia Civile and will be prosecuted for possession of an illegal firearm.

FECAPAP (together with PACMA) have denounced the killing, in that the dog’s owner didn’t give it a chance of being rehomed by handing it in to a local shelter.

  • Galga Salva, burnt with acid – Galgos del Norte update

You remember the story of Salva, the galga found in the perrera in Burgos, burned with acid, rescued by Galgos del Norte. Sadly she lost her fight for life. This is a translation from their website.

‘Salva has left us, dehydration from the burns affected all her internal organs and she not been able to continue fighting.

  • Young galga needs someone to take her from the galguera – Badajoz

Badajoz galga galguera 250 12 2011This little galga in Badajoz is only a year old, and nervous. Her galguera (female, note) says she will not hunt and so she doesn’t want it. I suppose we should be grateful so far she hasn’t abandoned it nor taken it to the perrera. Hopefully one of the Spanish associations or volunteers has taken her. It’s an example of what is going on all the time now, the pressure the volunteers and associations are under. Here’s the email contact, if anyone can help.

  • Save a child? Save a dog? Either way, you save a valuable life.

Zaragoza perrera galgo 250 12 2011I took this off Facebook today. Please read this article with an open mind before taking the familiar and very unfortunate question: “With the children who are starving, let’s save a dog ? “.Yes, there are many children who die of hunger, but, fortunately, not in Spain.

In Spain one hundred thousand dogs are abandoned each year. With the advent of the crisis, kennels and shelters have been saturated. And this epidemic of dropouts shows me what I already knew: if you buy a dog as one who buys a bag, pay for a puppy just because the breed has become fashionable, it is as likely to leave as you stop wearing the bag when season pass.

  • Gran Canaria – holidays in the sun – not for the abandoned animals!

Let’s not forget the shelters on the islands where so many people spend holidays in the sun…Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Mallorca, Ibiza…….behind the glitz, abandoned dogs and cats struggle to survive. It’s only thanks to the few shelters and volunteers that some of them are saved. But they still need to find forever homes, mostly on the European mainland.

  • Burned with Acid – dumped in the Burgos perrera!

Burgos 4 250 12 2011A while ago, animal volunteers in Burgos area, which I have travelled through and is a mass of half finished apartment blocks and huge cranes – a building site – heard that it is difficult to adopt out of the Burgos perrera. Immense ignorance, lack of information, lack of compliance with the law, the carelessness…. on 9th November this galga arrived, starving, normal for a dog abandoned on the street.

But Galgos del Norte got in there and this is what they found….(click on Lee Mas under the Salva story

The diagnosis of the vet, words cannot describe her suffering – BURNED by acid…. and this dog was just left in the kennels in the municipal kennels without treatment.

  • Mairena Killing Station – Petition to close it down

Mairena 1 250In previous years I’ve featured galgos and podencos dumped in the Mairena killing station (obviously there are thousands of other types of dogs dumped there too which suffer the same horrendous end to their lives). Because of the bad publicity, volunteers were banned from going in to photo the dogs.

There is now an on-line petition to close the place down. This is the link. The petition is in Spanish and a translation is below. You have to register with the petition website, here are the instructions by on-line translator:

  • Irresponsible galgueros continue to dump their dogs – leaving the rest of the world to deal with the problems they cause!

Gesse GALGAS 250HEMBRAS[1] 20 05 2011It’s something regular readers of Galgo News already know; the numbers of galgos dumped at the perreras and shelters because they won’t take responsibility for keeping them during the summer months when they can’t hunt. What selfish bastards – expecting everyone else to deal with the problem they cause. We WILL beat them one day, but in the meantime, here’s an article by Greyhounds Rescue Holland about the problem.
