In November I received a circular email from Humane Society International in the US appealing for donations to help a team help Street Dogs in Bhutan. So I wrote and asked them to support our fight for protection for the Spanish galgos and podencos. Here’s a copy of their reply, and my response to them. Cadiz, no Spanish holiday for the galgos living here
News came in last week about this galga taken to a vet for urgent medical treatment. It is suspected that the wounds were caused by a dog fight. Because of their calm non-aggressive nature, galgos are often used as bait to train fighting dogs! It is possible her uteris and womb are damaged, she has been operated on and is now in a foster home in Cadiz.

Jerez perrera Galgos – SOS Galgos saves some – more dumped by hunters!
SOS Galgos have taken some of the galgos from the Jerez perrera in Cadiz, including the heavily pregnant bitch. Here’s what Anna Clements says.
‘Some photos of the galgos we got out of the Jerez shelter today (Monday). The two brindle ones together should be arriving on Wednesday and will be at the event. We plan to get some more out during the course of the week. More were taken into the perrera today, brought in by hunters.’

Jerez perrera, Cadiz – 15 galgos dumped for killing, at least one of them heavily in pup, all of them terrified, wondering what they have done wrong to be in such a place. Spanish Galgos Ulises, Maisey, Luna from El Paraiso – please donate to vet fees
More abandoned and rescued galgos……from the perrera, from the countryside, urbanizations……….they are being abandoned everywhere, and it is only November – still the middle of the Spanish hunting season! One of the galgas rescued from El Paraiso could be pregnant, so an urgent spaying operation has now been carried out. And Maisey, an abandoned injured galga – sadly her leg could not be saved, so she is yet another one with an amputation. And the vet fees need paying!
Ulises was a galgo who had been living rough for months, no one could get near him. Eventually he was so ill he could be caught. He has leishmania, ehrlichia, rickets, a skin condition, but he is a fighter, as are the other two…..he wants to live and experience a forever home.

Greyhounds in Nood Belgium – helping the galgos
Please take time to read this news from Greyhounds in Nood Belgium, another group who work tirelessly with volunteers in Spain to help the galgos. Regular trips are made by the team to work in the refuges and bring back dogs for rehoming. You will be horrified to see, towards the end, pictures of two galgos, burned alive on wasteground in Madrid, discovered shortly after gitanos had moved out.

It’s easy to overlook the problem for the abandoned dogs on the Spanish Islands, and so here’s a reminder of some of the associations who work extremely hard to save, care for and rehome these deserving animals. Podencos especially have a very hard life and their only hope of a future is off the islands on mainland Europe.

Mo Swatek of Pro-Galgo has had 2 visitors from Spain this week. A couple from America have today, 5th November, taken half a dozen galgos back to the US to new homes. Check out the pix on the Pro-Galgo website.
