  • Closing down a bad perrera – creates more problems than it solves

Mairena perrera death row 4 1109 250Closing down a perrera does not solve any problems, it simply creates more problems. Many perreras keep the dogs and cats on death row in reasonably clean conditions, with food and water. They are also happy to allow adoptions of the animals, to give them a second chance of life. Other perreras keep the animals in atrocious conditions, as we know from publicity on the Internet.

At the end of the day, improving the conditions for animals in the bad perreras should be the priority, not closing them down. I posted a link to an appeal organised by a third party to close down Mairena perrera but stated that I did not agree with it. Comments further down the post also confirmed that other people agreed there are preferable solutions.

  • Save a child? Save a dog? Either way, you save a valuable life.

Zaragoza perrera galgo 250 12 2011I took this off Facebook today. Please read this article with an open mind before taking the familiar and very unfortunate question: “With the children who are starving, let’s save a dog ? “.Yes, there are many children who die of hunger, but, fortunately, not in Spain.

In Spain one hundred thousand dogs are abandoned each year. With the advent of the crisis, kennels and shelters have been saturated. And this epidemic of dropouts shows me what I already knew: if you buy a dog as one who buys a bag, pay for a puppy just because the breed has become fashionable, it is as likely to leave as you stop wearing the bag when season pass.

  • Escape from Jerez killing station – forever together in the UK

Holly in jerez 12 2010 In the middle of December I posted one of many appeals about galgos dumped in Jerez perrera for killing – the Spanish hunting season was only half over! An email arrived in my Inbox from a lady in the UK who had her eye on one of the galgas and asking if I could arrange contact with someone nearby Jerez/Cadiz who could rescue her. As I’d already asked for a young one to be rescued for me, wheels were set in motion. The galgas were reserved – 3 and a puppy, and 112carlotagalgos travelled to the perrera to collect the dogs.

One of them, beautiful Risa, came to me for foster and rehoming – she is now with a lovely lady in northern France. Sadly the puppy became very ill and died. Holly, as the cream galga was named, was put into kennels, as was the other galga – who was very timid and lacking in confidence.

  • Hanged galga in Toledo – saved! Trapped galga in Toledo – saved! Please help with vet fees

Hanged galga 2 Bea June 2011 190 This galga was hung last week. Luckily she was rescued before she died, and is now in the care of L’Europe des Levriers.

Her trachea was severed by the thin rope around her neck and her lungs were very infected. Her neck had two holes from the trachea and worms and lots of shit were inside. The most complicated was that there were also very thin bots in the wound.

The galga was also suffering from a undernourishment and her liver and her kidneys had infection.
