I’m just one person sitting at my computer, trying to keep up with the news coming in from Spain and the Spanish Islands about galgos and podencos…..just this afternoon, whilst I took a couple of hours out to mow the lawn, 9 emails came in about galgos and podencos….on death row in killing stations in Seville, Merida, Cordoba, and on top of that there are the appeals from individuals about abandoned galgos in Malaga, Cadiz, elsewhere in Spain – can anyone in those areas help catch them? I do my best, but I can’t always post them all.
This story from a volunteer with the El Albergue asso sums up the galguero attitude to his dog.
‘This is a small sample of what we see every day in the mail or live in every part of the country, and many which we never see .. they are killed and buried in the middle of nowhere.
For me – and I cannot use the phrase UNTIL WHEN?, we tend to do as much as we can. I think that long ago the government should have taken action to stop it, but with demonstrations and petitions maybe we make a small protest, but every year there seems to be more and more dogs suffering the same.
Associations, activists, lawyers who fight for this cause, WHAT CAN WE DO?
This morning we received a call alerting us to the the neighborhood Las Portadas de Dos Hermanas(Sevilla). There was a live dog part in a bag. When we found this was a galgo hanging on by a thread of life, dumped in the rubble and garden waste in a rubbish bin. He had been stuck in a potato sack and thrown to in the bin with any other garbage. He must have been a long time without eating or drinking and was in full sun. Skeletal, rigid, cold and with multiple wounds, he looked as though he had been killed, except that he was still breathing with difficulty!!
He has now been admitted to a veterinary clinic where we are trying to rush to give him the slightest chance of survival, between infection and anaemia yand he has suffered beatings. Since he has endured such agony waiting for who knows how long to be rescued, a chance of life is the least he deserves.
We express our deepest revulsion towards the undesirable bastard who has been able to do this to a live animal. It seems incredible that people of that ilk live in our own city, you come across them in the street like normal people. Nor do we understand those other people who have been listening to his screams for help and have not taken any notice immediately, telling us that “the dog must be dead because we no longer hear it. “
We would also like to complain to those who have jurisdiction over the plight of so many animals in our city, allowing this cruelty to continue. For too long we receive notices of animals hung, shot, beheaded, burned, tied up to die of hunger and thirst in the countryside, thrown alive into the trash … and this will not change unless people are made aware that animals deserve respect.
Year after year continues the indifference and inaction of our authorities, which limit themselves to making awareness campaigns from the hygienic point of view. Certainly they do not tell citizens not to abandon animals, but only highlight dog dirt and road accidents that may cause disease or infection to humans.
That has absolutely nothing to do with animal protection and the prevention of cruelty and neglect. The galgo dumped in the trash did well according to this campaign.
Meanwhile people who fight for the humane treatment of animals strive to raise awareness with the limited resources we have, but unfortunately it is a drop in the ocean while the authorities are not involved in this fight and continue looking the other way.
As for the dogs in particular, they suffer neglect and abuse in our country, and we explain: as society increasingly condemns the mistreatment to which they are often subjected, and we raise our voice tirelessly to demand that they are treated with dignity, the Administration not only turns a deaf ear but continues to promote hunting dogs and subsidizing galgueros. The authorities do this knowing what happens in Andalusia to the thousands of dogs and hounds that galgueros discard after each hunting season, and the inhuman conditions in which many of these animals are raised and live poorly while they are useful.
But this is much better understood when one learns for example that the government, regional, provincial and municipal authorities give not only subsidies but also galgueros occupy important positions in the hunting federations too. It is for such issues which means that in our country – Spain – we do not advance in animal protection.
Finally ask each citizen to denounce every instance of abuse or neglect of an animal that becomes known, to protest against the council when it does not respond to animals as it should according to the laws that do exist to protect and requiring that they be enforced. And to facilitate and support truly protective organizations, so that with the help of everyone one day we can stop being ashamed of the unworthy treatment we give to the animals here in Spain and in southern Europe.

aww this is awfull poor darling i am lost for more words
Absolutely heartbreaking….I pray he recovers and goes on to find the love he deserves so much. I hope that the bastard who did this to him rots in hell!
No words…just tears down my face.
@ Jenny: don’t worry, the bastard will rot in hell. When he dies the galgos, little angels in disguise will be there to judge. According to Egyptian mythology it is god Anubi (who is thought to be half man half greyhound) who judges people and weighs their hearts after their death…somehow the thought of that makes me feel better
Would love to go to Spain and personally confront the person who did this. I guarantee that you would never see that person again.
Shame on you Spain !!! These dogs are helpless.I have no words for this.I did not go for the bullfighting in Spain and for this, shall I never go on holiday go to Spain. The goverment MUST DO NOW SOMETHING !!IT CAN’T NOT LONGER SUCH LIKE THIS!!!
Sadly the goverment just don,t care one tiny bit
The hunters say it does not happen it is made up
Now i think we all know differntly
it does happen each and every day. So many wonderful people out there working their socks of to help depending on donations only to help the galgos and podencos
The goverment won,t do any thing to stop this untill you hit them where it hurts
stop people coming to Spain on holiday tell them what is happeing here
with out the money the holiday makers bring in
Spain would be on it,s knees very very fast so hit back
share this on every forum you are on Hound or otherwise
Tell the world this must stop NOW.

Bonjour
Ive written to the association to ask them to let
me know how he goes on. As you are in Spain, please feel free to do the
same. Please, everyone, write to the asso direct and ask about him.
Ive told them to make a denuncia (you may remember Sandra Baas said you dont
need the name of a person to make a denuncia).

Unbelievable. i’m speechless.
Speechless and above all angry, fuck this bastard he must rot in hell. Sorry this is realy to much. I know a lot of the treatment in spain about the galgo’s and other dogs. How cruel can they be everytime I think this is it it’s getting worse.
I understand your anger but thankfully not everyone in Spain are so, only a minority. I hope you understand, here are wonderful people who love animals and would die for ellos.Yo same. We will continue helping them until this is over and undesirable to make these things pay for what they do.

Hi
Please be sure that ALL my readers know that this
cruelty is perpetrated by a minority and do not hold it against all
Spanish. They absolutely support the work you all do. And they want
to know what they can to do help me and all of you make a difference, and stop
this sickness in some people. Sadly some of the protest comes in the form
of boycotting coming to Spain for holidays, buying Spanish goods, which hits
innocent Spanish people who are not involved in the holocaust/massacre.
But at times we feel this is a way where we can help make an impression on the
corrupt policitians etc. who do nothing to help all you marvellous people who
live with this horror every day. Please rest assured my readers are
absolutely behind all of you who try and help.

How is Esperanza doing ?? Are there any news ??
On Elalberque`s homepage ther is also the possibility to donate via Paypal. I just did it because I think that spanish animal-protectionists, who take care of a dog like they do really should be supported.
Best regards
Kerstin
