  • Spanish Galgo massacred for Christmas – never ending

Friday, December 23, 2011 Another galgo massacred. Christmas in Spain.

An association volunteer reports. This is horrible, is a non-stop.

When we are collecting a galgo Marlon from the clinic where he had jhad an operation, we received a call from someone who sees this horror and asks for help for her.

  • Last chance for Toledo galgos on death row

Toledo galgos 3 333 12 2011These galgos are in the Toledo perrera and the association has been told it is the last time they will be allowed in there. In 3 months they have managed to take our more than 100 dogs, with the help of the protectoras and individuals who have made this possible. These are the galgos currently there, mostly young ones.

  • Life for the galgos in Spain – ‘Children of the Wind’

‘The Curse of the Children of the Wind’ – video to watch on YouTube. Some of the photos are quite old. (Thanks, Val, for posting on Fb Save the Galgos)

  • Las Palma, Canary Islands – man shoots dog dead with homemade weapon

FECAPAP (Canaria Federation of associations protective of animals and plants), in the Canary Islands, recently condemned the killing of a dog by a home made weapon. Earlier this week, a resident of Mazo, La Palma, killed his dog by shooting it with an illegally owned homemade firearm made of two cylindrical tubes, using 16 cartridges! The man was arrested by the Guardia Civile and will be prosecuted for possession of an illegal firearm.

FECAPAP (together with PACMA) have denounced the killing, in that the dog’s owner didn’t give it a chance of being rehomed by handing it in to a local shelter.

  • Save a child? Save a dog? Either way, you save a valuable life.

Zaragoza perrera galgo 250 12 2011I took this off Facebook today. Please read this article with an open mind before taking the familiar and very unfortunate question: “With the children who are starving, let’s save a dog ? “.Yes, there are many children who die of hunger, but, fortunately, not in Spain.

In Spain one hundred thousand dogs are abandoned each year. With the advent of the crisis, kennels and shelters have been saturated. And this epidemic of dropouts shows me what I already knew: if you buy a dog as one who buys a bag, pay for a puppy just because the breed has become fashionable, it is as likely to leave as you stop wearing the bag when season pass.

  • Gran Canaria – holidays in the sun – not for the abandoned animals!

Let’s not forget the shelters on the islands where so many people spend holidays in the sun…Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Mallorca, Ibiza…….behind the glitz, abandoned dogs and cats struggle to survive. It’s only thanks to the few shelters and volunteers that some of them are saved. But they still need to find forever homes, mostly on the European mainland.

  • Radio Programme on Galgos Thurs 8th December – please listen

Last week, Tony highlighted the plight of the Podenco on his radio show with a great response from you listeners. Some of the response was from the UK. Tonight he is carrying on where he left off and including the beautiful and much maligned Galgo in his broadcast.

Please listen in and hopefully try to take part. These dogs desperately need help and any publicity is good for them.

His broadcast starts at 9pm (Spanish time) 8pm (UK time) and you can listen in by going to www.bigfm.es and then clicking on Listen Live Now. Any emails can be sent to info@bigfm.es and Tony will respond to you on air. His show is called Nightowls.

  • Mairena Killing Station – Petition to close it down

Mairena 1 250In previous years I’ve featured galgos and podencos dumped in the Mairena killing station (obviously there are thousands of other types of dogs dumped there too which suffer the same horrendous end to their lives). Because of the bad publicity, volunteers were banned from going in to photo the dogs.

There is now an on-line petition to close the place down. This is the link. The petition is in Spanish and a translation is below. You have to register with the petition website, here are the instructions by on-line translator:

  • Irresponsible galgueros continue to dump their dogs – leaving the rest of the world to deal with the problems they cause!

Gesse GALGAS 250HEMBRAS[1] 20 05 2011It’s something regular readers of Galgo News already know; the numbers of galgos dumped at the perreras and shelters because they won’t take responsibility for keeping them during the summer months when they can’t hunt. What selfish bastards – expecting everyone else to deal with the problem they cause. We WILL beat them one day, but in the meantime, here’s an article by Greyhounds Rescue Holland about the problem.
