  • Hunting in Spain with galgos – Pepis Dog Refuge offers a safe haven

Pepis Lacey 250The end of the hunting season draws near and the refuges and perreras are full to overflowing with dumped hunting dogs, mainly galgos and podencos. Pepis is no exception and I met many of their galgos when I visited recently. Some of the newest galgos are at the top of this page but scroll right down and you’ll find others like Richardo, Passarella, Dina…who have been waiting too long. Please consider taking one into your home and heart, you will be rewarded with a heap of love.

The latest to join the refuge is stunning white Lacey (above), abandoned and eventually caught by a local hunter and brought to the refuge.

  • Prodeanse, Seville – Galgo puppy saved and needing help

Paula Prodeanse puppy 1 250 1 2014This poor galga has been named Paula, a baby of about 3 months old, taken from a gypsy by Prodeanse, Seville, one of the shelters I visited in 2012. She had vomiting, diarrhea – from which she was dehydrated – and a broken leg. It’s not the first dog that they have taken from this man, who cares very little about his animals.

Prodeanse are asking for your help to pay the vet fees for Paula. The operation to repair her leg will be between 600-700 euros and there is all the medication for her too. Here’s a Bing translation of their appeal.

Loli says, ‘This is what we have to part the operation that will be more than 600 euros and we don’t have the money to pay for it yet. We need your help, it will invoice.

  • Galgo Tico takes a bath – update on beating those who abandoned and injured him

Tiko bath time 250 7 12 2013Tico’s bathtime! Here are words from Sandra.

Tico walked by, panicking, dark road of abandonment and distress, carried away by the swing of steps without any sense, direct to certain death. Suddenly, through the darkness, a light blinded him for a moment, “finally someone coming to my rescue,” he thought. But that illusion vanished, remained a wrenching pain that not only broke bones, but the soul. Suddenly HE shot hundreds of feet and HIS body joined the cold and rough asphalt.

  • Dog fighting – galgos as bait?

Yuki 190 2 12 1 2014Another case of animal cruelty – this is the case of a galga which was found by a girl in the middle of the street in terrible condition. The girl, who is a student, took the dog to the Vet despite not having enough money to pay the treatment…the Vet said she is covered in injuries probably because she has been used for sparring – bait for dog fighting. She has been bitten everywhere…broken teeth…anemia…skin Leishmania…an eye in very bad state, torn part of the ear…etc. etc. The galga has been named Yuki.

    Here is an Internet translation.

We called her Yuki, which means courage. No chip, or strength. And yes much, much pain, immense sadness and clinging to life. She is about 3 years old and black. This greyhound is alive at this time thanks to the opportunity to have crossed her a good person who, without thinking of anything else, has picked her up in this terrible state.

  • Update on galga Tina at Pepis Dog Refuge

Tina 2 190 1 2014She has been to the vet for her regular check up, our vet was not happy that she had made enough progress with her leg. The xrays showed the break has mended fine, but Tina still refuses to use her leg. We do exercise her leg every day and she is still on medication. There should be no reason now why she cannot use that leg, so as the picture shows, we will now as often as we physically can, make her have to use the back leg and get the muscle built up again, ready for her next operation to remove the metal plates.

Tina is a gorgeous galga and will make someone a fabulous companion. I met her during my recent visit to Pepis as she wandered around the drive with her house mates.

  • Scooby Junta – the law on ‘training’ galgos from motorised vehicles

This note was sent by Cobie at Scooby Valladolid – you may remember last year the Junta proposed rescinding the law in Andalucia.

‘Good news: this letter, send to Fermin, informs that the junta de Andalucia will NOT approve the training from galgos behind motorised vehicles, it STAYS forbidden like in the rest from Spain!

    Fermin: ¡Lo hemos conseguido!
