  • Spanish Federation of Galgos (FEG) discusses galgo registration

Federacion Espanol Galgo logo 250 Sandra Baas of Baas Galgo has just forwarded this information link. You will have to use a translator, as the information is in Spanish. The important point is that the FEG – Federacion Espanola Galgos based in Madrid – is this month discussing the registration and identification of galgos owned by its members.

They say on their website “After more than a century of lagging behind other countries which use galgos and greyhounds for competition, the Spanish Federation of Galgos, with its president D Carlos Sanz Calvo at the helm, has adopted an ambitious Plan of Record and Indentification of every galgo born under the aegis of the federation”.

Sadly, this only one of several galgo hunting federations and only relates to galgos owned by its members, but it is a start, and long overdue.

  • Valladolid perrera – news on the galgos?

Living in France, I don’t have too much of a problem reading French news, etc. But I can’t even begin to understand Spanish, which is why I have to use a translator. This link is to the blog with news of the poor galgos in a perrera in Valladolid. I’m a bit pushed for time but if anyone can translate the latest news and post it in a comment here, that will be great.

UPDATE – Eva of Scooby Medina tells me that Fermin Perez is working hard to get these dogs out, that it is possible they are not dead. But the perrera is being unco-operative.

  • Heartless Brits abandon their dogs in Spain

Los Infiernos refuge Tina Solera 300 Galgo News is chiefly about the plight of the galgos and podencos, in Spain and the Spanish Islands. However, being a Libran, I am not averse to speaking out about the heartless Brits who are leaving Spain and their dogs behind – and there are some in France who do the same.

Linda, from Los Infiernos shelter in Murcia, explains.

‘I help at the same refuge as Tina, who has been appealing for help to rehome the galgos abandoned by the hunters. The Brits don’t bring their dogs to our refuge at the moment; the dogs are found abandoned and then brought to us by the police. I will tell you a few of the cases I have encountered.

  • Baas Galgo – help towards the cost of the 90 galgos dumped at the shelter

Baas galgo poster appeal 04 2010 230 Remember the story of the 90 galgos dumped at the Villa del Rio shelter in Cordoba at the end of January? Leticia at the shelter, and Sandra Baas of Baas Galgo have been working hard to care for the galgos and rehome them. There are now 70 galgos still at the shelter and Baas Galgo are appealing for donations to pay for food etc for these galgos.

If these dogs are still in the shelter in August/September, any bets the galgueros will be back to get them for the next hunting season?!

Watch Galgo News this week, as I’m working on preparing a campaign about this! In the meantime, if you can help Baas Galgo, donate here.

  • An urgent plea – anyone a dog trap to lend Charl to catch the Estepona galga?

Charl desperately needs a trap to catch the galga loose in Estepona. She has asked around to borrow one, without success. If she does not have a trap soon, the galga could disappear, or get injured or…….

Please contact Charl urgently on comdelrio@hotmail.com

  • Sick and injured in a killing station in Spain – anyone help?

    Galgos2 Charl 11 02010
These dogs are in a killing station in Valladolid. They have, at the most, 20 days left to be saved from death. Euthenasia in a killing station is very painful for the dogs.

Yet again, the problem for the volunteers who visit the perrera is that they could be forbidden to go again. But they want to help the galgos. One they rescued was extremely skeletal, these others need veterinary treatment.

If anyone can offer foster homes or space in a shelter, please contact these people urgently.

  • Heartless Brits abroad abandon their dogs – Lanzarote, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Gibraltar, mainland Spain

SARA Lanzarote Hondo 04 2010 250 I know I am always writing about what bastards the Spanish hunters are, whether on the Spanish mainland or on the Spanish Islands – there is no excuse for the extremes of cruelty they inflict on innocent dogs at the end of every hunting season.

But let’s not forget the Brits – they moved abroad for a ‘better life’ – adopted a dog from a refuge – and now they are returning home and abandoning their dogs back to the refuges.

  • True Spain – cheap Spanish holidays – suffering behind the glitter and golf

Blindgalga 002 Tina 04 2010 250 As I cried tears over the galga left sick and severely injured at the side of the motorway – curse the man who abandoned her – there is yet another tale.

    Here the volunteer explains.

‘Today I am completely heart broken yet again to have seen this young galga in our refuge. She arrived last night after a lady rang the police to say this galga was sleeping in the middle of the road. There is a reason she was sleeping and starving in the middle of the road, SHE’S BLIND.

  • Motorways in Spain – who knows what’s in the Litter – Spain for Holidays?!!!

Mora 3 Charl 04 2010 250 I receive a lot of stories and photos of what happens to galgos when the heartless galgueros abandon them. It all upsets and ANGERS me, but this one made me weep buckets of tears. Just so much I could hardly see to write.

This is what the shelter says.

This is Mora, another victim, just 2 years old …

We found her on the shoulder of a motorway, unable to move, she’d been there for some days because she was malnourished and dehydrated.
