  • Speakers at the PAES Conference – pix

Herewith pix of the speakers at the conference, not in any order.

Amalia from the Murcia Veterinary College tells the audience how important it is to get vet reports right for denuncias and for obtaining nucleo zoologico licences.

PAES Pedro 250Pedro José Moratalla Moratalla spoke about UPROMA, the first police unit to be set up specifically to deal with animal welfare.

Núria Querol Viñas told us how there is nearly always a link between violence/mistreatment against humans and against animals.

  • PAES International Animal Welfare Conference – October 2015 – book now

Sorry that I haven’t published many stories in the last week but I’m working hard on my presentation and slide show for the PAES conference where I am speaking about the problem for the galgos and podencos in Spain and the Spanish Islands.

  • Spain – a pet is rescued every 5 minutes!

When will authorities start to deal with the uncontrolled overbreeding of animals, not just dogs, and mass abandonment? Do they not realise what a blight it is on a country that relies a lot for income on the tourist industry?

    Story here

  • Dumped in trash bin…no 3

Galgo pup dumpster 170 30 7 2015The horror for the dogs goes on. Having reported two separate stories of galgo pups being dumped in rubbish bins…here’s a third one, now saved.

Outrageous! Until when are we going to have to keep living these situations??

This morning (30/7/2015) we were in the car when we saw a group of people with two Guardia Civile looking in a dumpster. We stopped immediately because we feared the worst. And so it was, a galguita pup about 3 months had been lying in the dumpster in a bag.

Poor baby, being inside of the bag and nearly 40 degrees of temperature. Immediately I communicate to the Guardia Civile that we are a rescue and, even though at first they put to us a million questions! Finally we get the puppy to the vet.

  • Symptoms of leishmania in dogs

    General signs

Joint swelling and joint problems, difficulty in walking (stiff gait).

Lethargy and reluctance to go for walks

Constant shivering and shaking. This could be rigours, which indicates that the kidneys
are involved. If your dog has this, get to a vet as soon as possible and get the kidneys checked.

Enlarged, hard lymph glands which can be felt as lumps in the neck, just behind the jaw joint.

These are additional signs and symptoms indicated by members of the Living with Leish
    Facebook group.

Sneezing, and a cold or chest infection blocked nostrils.

Bad smell coming from the dog. Described as “Gorgonzola”, a “monkey cage” etc.

    Overheating with panting.

N.B. Many of the above signs can be confused with other illnesses. If they do not respond to conventional treatment, this may indicate that Leishmania is the underlying cause.

  • Toledo hunter imprisoned – from 2012

CONFIRMED – prison sentence for the man who beat his galgo to death. Six months in prison and a 2 year ban from any activity or profession involving animals including hunting was the sentence confirmed by the court in Toledo for the man who killed his galgo by repeatedly hitting him in the head with a cobble stone. This happened in 2012 in Orgaz (Toledo) and the accused was sentenced with the same penalty last year. After the appeal the court confirmed the prison sentence and ban from the date of 10th JUne 2015. The Association for the Protection Adoption and Defense of Animals in Toledo (APADAT) celebrated this decision and informed the Hunting Federation so that they could revoke any hunting licenses which the man may still hold. They also are continuing to fight for a lifetime ban so that this man may never again be involved in any activity involving animals

  • Container dogs in Murcia – – update

20th May update on container dogs from Viv Wharton:-

Sorry I missed posting my update here yesterday. There isnt much more to tell, apart from we know the dogs are still barking and sounds the same. We are talking all the time with our PAES defensa partners (the legal team) working on this; the petition has around 20,000 signatures; some people think we are relying on the petition to get the dogs out, this is not so…we will get them out only through legal chanels – which are the denuncias that have been placed.
