This is Cascabel, one of the Jerez galgos, after 12 days of veterinary care with Silvia of GalgoConnectionSpain in Valencial Here’s what Silvia says. ‘This dog came twelve days ago, the ulcers infected, dehydrated, malnourished, we thought he was going to die but, after some days of feeding him intravenously, he started to eat one his own. He’s gained three kilos.’ Silvia says there are problems with all of the Jerez galgos. Many of the perreras don’t feed the dogs much,’why feed a dog you’re going to kill’! Accommodation in Spain – not for the faint hearted!
A couple of videos for you to watch; one is a galguero telling the truth about the attitude to their galgos, and the second illustrates the conditions in which galgos are often kept. Note also a horse is kept there too! And a third video – life for the galgos, life for the volunteers – it takes its toll on them all.
There is also a campaign being run now to stop British and Irish racing greyhounds being sent to India; here you can see them being used to hunt in Pakistan!

Motoring in Spain – or how to train galgos to run….faster…
One of the ways of training a galgo is to run it alongside a motor vehicle or motorbike. This was made illegal because of the injuries suffered by galgos who went down. I have seen the injuries, horrific, on one galga we brought out of Spain. In 2011 the Junta of Andalucia legalised it. Here is a video showing what happens, a group who were trying to stop it, other galgueros who came in to support their friend, and finally Seprona arrived. Correct link here if you have problems with the other one

Galgo Marko – Pepis Refuge, Animals in Distress and Arca Noah to the rescue
Joe Safont-Ruiz of Animals in Distress tells the story of this poor boy.
‘A Galgo (Greyhound) was left tied up outside Pepis Refugio – The dogs were barking as normal but Alan and Jane knew the different barks and this meant a new arrival. Alan walked down to the gate with a small torch only to see two green glows at the gate; yes it was Marko (his new name).

Badajoz galgo – galguera threatens to kill him! Another disposable dog!
A volunteer in Badajoz pleads for help for another galgo. ‘ARWIN is a young galgo 16 months old… the galguera (female hunter) contacted us and said he will kill him in 48 hours if we can’t find anywhere for him.
When we came to see the dog, we found he was terrified, he had a lot of bite marks on him, some healed, some more recent. I have asked the galguera please let us bathe him, heal the wounds and carry him to the vet… but she says the dog is not hers, and the dog has to go.

Galgos in danger, Cordoba perrera and Badajoz … the holocaust continues
If a galgo won’t hunt, then the galguero gets rid of it. Some just dump them anywyhere, others will pass the dog onto another hunter…it doesn’t want to hunt, so it gets passed on to another hunter…..this is what has happened to one young galgo. This isn’t a photo of her, we don’t have one yet, just the appeal, can anyone squeeze her in somewhere to stop her ending up abandoned or in Badajoz perrera. garrapateracoherente@hotmail.com
And 7 galgos in Cordoba perrera, on death row – male and female, from 1-3 years old.
