  • Galga shot in the head – latest news

You remember the galga shot in the face, being cared for by Pro-Galgo. Now called Fatima, it’s great news to report that she is healing and is now in her forever home. See pix here. Scroll down the page.

You will also see pix of an afghan found abandoned, starving and filthy, in an empty house. The owners had taken their other dogs and left him behind. Pro-Galgo had him clipped and he is now in foster, looking for his forever home.

  • Spanish Galgos Ulises, Maisey, Luna from El Paraiso – please donate to vet fees

Naisey after operation 24 11 2010 250 More abandoned and rescued galgos……from the perrera, from the countryside, urbanizations……….they are being abandoned everywhere, and it is only November – still the middle of the Spanish hunting season! One of the galgas rescued from El Paraiso could be pregnant, so an urgent spaying operation has now been carried out. And Maisey, an abandoned injured galga – sadly her leg could not be saved, so she is yet another one with an amputation. And the vet fees need paying!

Ulises was a galgo who had been living rough for months, no one could get near him. Eventually he was so ill he could be caught. He has leishmania, ehrlichia, rickets, a skin condition, but he is a fighter, as are the other two…..he wants to live and experience a forever home.

And now there is news just in that upwards of 20 galgos have been taken to the El Paraiso perrera.

Volunteers and associations are working round the clock to save them. Here’s what Charl del Rio says, after her visit to El Paraiso yesterday.

  • Greyhound Rescue Holland help galga Dana find her forever family

You may remember Dana, the rescued galga who became very stressed in kennels. Through a contact in Greyhound Rescue Holland, she has now found a wonderful forever home. Here’s what her new Mom says.

‘Dana is already changing a lot inside and outside. In the beginning she was frightened of bicycles, not of motorbikes or cars, but this is improving. She walks perfectaly on the lead, when I stop, she stops and when I continue, she continues. She is still afraid of men although she doesn´t hide anymore, just barks at them. When my husband is at home she walks around with no problem and he can caress her without problem and she accepts biscuits from him, so that is improving as well. She is especially fond of me and she likes the children a lot.

  • Two podencas desperately needing forever homes

FREYA Tina 09 2010 250 This is Freya, a podenca at Los Infiernos refuge, Murcia, where Tina is a volunteer. Tina explains ‘She is a podenco suffering terribly. She has been chewing at her own leg and has broken through the skin. She doesn’t want to eat and had lost a lot of weight but volunteers have been hand feeding her wet food so that is helping. I’ve had her moved to a more comfortable place in the refuge and she is improving but would like to see her leave asap. She is approx 10mths, great with people but nervous with other dogs until she gets to know them!’

    Please contact Tina direct.

And don’t forget sweet Mary, currently in a kennels and desperate for her forever home. Contact Charl direct.

Mary 1 Charl 08 2010 250 Mary has now been bathed, wormed, flea treatment, ticks removed, and taken to the vet – age estimated just 5-6 months old. See how tiny she is, sitting next to the laundry basket! Not surprisingly, she has no microchip. She has tested negative for leishmania, just waiting for the results for ehrlichia and filaria. These should be back in a couple of days, and then she will be vaccinated etc. Once this has been done, she will go to the kennels with Dana.

  • Mary, a young podenca rescued in Alhaurin, Spain, desperately needing help

Alhaurin baby 1 Charl 08 2010.JPG cropped 250 A picture of sheer unadulterated terror in the eyes of this little dog! Charl del Rio found her at a petrol station, lost, terrified, hungry. She managed to catch her, called her Mary as she is like a little lamb, and now tells the story.

‘I went to visit the galgo Charlie after his castration, and on the way home I stopped at the petrol station in Alhaurin, where I found this little lost soul, a baby podenco which looks like a little fox, COVERED in pinchy thorns… it was late, I got to the petrol station and thought ill put petrol in the car. I stopped walking and she came up behind me. At a distance I thought she was older than she was, but I then could see she was just a baby.
