In the current economic crisis, charities are likely to suffer extensively, as people jettison their pets, and stop donating. G.R.I.N in the USA have been affected by the increased cost in fuel, checking dogs, and excess luggage charges.
They have appealed for help.

Galgos del Norte is a recently formed group of very experiences hound savers in Spain, ex-members of SOS Galgos, who rescue galgos, foster and arrange adoptions, and work closely with Pro-Galgo.

Mo Swatek, President of Pro-Galgo, says, ‘We recently brought 39 dogs out of Spain, three of whom were rehomed near Paris.

The dogs came from different shelters, like Tudela, Sevilla, Badajoz, Guadalajara and Pro-Galgo, Galgos112, and Galgos del Norte, all joined forces and transport together with RUTA8, a group of rescue ladies in Badajoz, founded by Mariangeles and Txaro.

They bought a super van and make now monthly 2 transports for different shelters in Spain, and our galgos and podencos also travel with them. It costs 80 euros per dog in transport costs, which comes out of the adoption fee.

With the help of volunteers in Spain, Passion Levriers carried out another galgo rescue last weekend, Charles Michael Frinzel reports.

“Well, once more I set off with gladness to think another 12 lucky galgos/greys and all sorts would find a better life here in France. As usual I stayed with Virginie at Hasparren, who makes us very welcome.

Fabienne Tremble of Passion Levriers recently visited the Canary Islands. Life for the podencos – Ibizan Hound – is not a happy one.

‘The Islands “Afortunadas”, as one calls them in Spain, means the blessed islands. Indeed they are, with their beauty, their climate, the luxuriant flora where the hibiscus is a shrub larger than the pink bay-trees of my garden and for the love of life of its inhabitants.

On the other hand for fauna it is a different matter. The marvellous podenco Canario, originating in these islands, always lives like the slave of man.

Hardly had I gotten out of the plane, the first thing that I saw while we awaited the rented car, was a light van parked in full sun with a pack of podencos who awaited their master patiently.

Dirty, legs full of dried mud, sad eyes, covered in ticks, they were suffocating in the heat 35ºC.
