• A Victim of Dog Fighting – now safely rehomed in Belgium

Sol injuredAmour des Galgos ASBL is a new association formed this year in Belgium, working with Amigos de los Galgos and the Pedro Munoz refuge in Cuidad Real.

One of their recent arrivals was Sol. He was a victim of fighting dogs – illegal in Spain. It’s common knowledge that galgos are used as bait in dog fights, as aggression is not in their nature and they don’t know how to defend themselves.

Luckily Sol was saved and treated for his wounds, and is now safely rehomed in Belgium. He was not the first galgo they brought out. Their first trip was in April.

  • The beginning of a journey into the world of the galgos

This time last year, the first week of July, I travelled into Spain, to Ciudad Real, to get my galga Karmel. Little did I know upon what a journey I was embarking.

I chose my galga Karmel from the website of L’Europe des Levriers.

I chose her because the information was that she had been in the refuge for a few months, she had a puppy – not hers – snuggling up to her in her picture – and she was brindle, which was the same colouring as our French levrier X.

It was a journey which changed my life.

  • A Little Light Relief!

Beryl and KarmelWhy do we love these galgos/greyhounds so much? For me it is their sleek lines, elegance of movement, regal stance, and most importantly all the love and affection they give to us unconditionally in spite of the cruelty most of them experience?

It’s because they also make us laugh – and remind us that they can sniff food out.

Yesterday I took 4 herby sausages wrapped in cling film out of the freezer, to defrost for a bbq dinner last night. During the day the sausages disappeared.

  • Hersey’s Cocoa Mulch – health warning for dogs

I received the following warning from Pat Getz of Greyhound Protection League.

We all know that chocolate is bad for dogs, so the product Cocoa Mulch, for use in gardens ‘to keep cats away’ is especially dangerous. Personally, I don’t see how a chocolate product manufacturer can know about using chocolate in gardens!

    Here’s more information.

  • Spanish players at Wimbledon – should we enlist their support?

Gaglo puppyI’m watching/listening to Wimbledon, wishing the Spanish players to lose! I know, they are tennis players, not galguerros, but they are Spanish. That’s enough for me!

After the story of Kamal, at the other end of the spectrum is another example of the Spanish cavalier attitude to the value of life. Wha a miracle is the creation of a new life, whether it is a human baby, or a puppy. This little baby was found abandoned, just one month old!

  • Two more Galgos in desperate need

    Gaglorescue
This is the story .. its the same all over Spain… galgos everywhere, galgos in shelters awaiting their final day.

Unless of course someone steps in from another association or rescuer, and takes them away, but they still need a family.

Even from the slim escape of a death sentence and now await a family of their own. Well this is the story of Leonor and Corriente!! They were stuck in a shelter awaiting their final day which was coming faster than they knew. In fact days!

  • Human Rights for Spain’s Apes – there’s hope for the galgos yet!

There’s hope for campaigners for a better life for Spain’s animals. The Spanish parliament is set to approve a new law giving the right to life and freedom to apes. If the law is passed, legislation will make it illegal to keep apes for use in animal experiments, circuses, TV commercials and filming. This is to comply with the Great Apes Project.

So perhaps this will give hope to all animal rights groups, especially in relation to bulls, donkeys and, of course, our beloved galgos. Plus all the thousands of other abandoned dogs and cats in the country..

  • Finding and catching a lost dog

Runaway dogIt’s something we all dread – our dog escaping and running off, and we can’t catch it. However well-trained we think they are, their hunting instinct is stronger, as is their fear, if they have experienced terrible suffering at the hands of the galguerros or gypsies.

Here is some extensive advice ‘Finding Your Lost Greyhound by Michael McCann and Finding Them is Only the First Step by Michael McCann’, which has been sent to me by Le Bulletin des Levriers.

I hope none of us ever need to have to refer to it!
