  • Podenco Rescue – support for podencos searching for forever homes

Darin 2010 009 250 I’d like to introduce you to Podenco Rescue. It’s a brand new website dedicated just to these fantastic dogs, who also suffer horrendously at the hands of the Spanish hunters, both on mainland Spain and the Spanish Islands.

It’s great news for the Podencos, hopefully they will get a much higher profile, and Podenco Rescue will be searching for homes for podencos in any shelter and with any association, wherever they are.

So if you want to know more, visit the website, they also have a Facebook page, and contact them if you either have a podenco looking for a home, can foster a podenco or even adopt one.

And you will find my foster dog Darin on the website. He’s an absolute poppet, a truly golden boy and really deserves a family who can give him the exercise and attention which is his due.

  • Spanish Federation of Galgos (FEG) discusses galgo registration

Federacion Espanol Galgo logo 250 Sandra Baas of Baas Galgo has just forwarded this information link. You will have to use a translator, as the information is in Spanish. The important point is that the FEG – Federacion Espanola Galgos based in Madrid – is this month discussing the registration and identification of galgos owned by its members.

They say on their website “After more than a century of lagging behind other countries which use galgos and greyhounds for competition, the Spanish Federation of Galgos, with its president D Carlos Sanz Calvo at the helm, has adopted an ambitious Plan of Record and Indentification of every galgo born under the aegis of the federation”.

Sadly, this only one of several galgo hunting federations and only relates to galgos owned by its members, but it is a start, and long overdue.

  • Valladolid perrera – news on the galgos?

Living in France, I don’t have too much of a problem reading French news, etc. But I can’t even begin to understand Spanish, which is why I have to use a translator. This link is to the blog with news of the poor galgos in a perrera in Valladolid. I’m a bit pushed for time but if anyone can translate the latest news and post it in a comment here, that will be great.

UPDATE – Eva of Scooby Medina tells me that Fermin Perez is working hard to get these dogs out, that it is possible they are not dead. But the perrera is being unco-operative.

  • Blind galga Esperanza – view her pix – safely rehomed away from Spain

The blind galga Esperanza from Los Infiernos refuge which was adopted by Galgos 112 and rehomed, is already happy in her new environment, after just one day! Renamed Pucca, here is a gallery of photos.

I wish we could have such happy endings for all the galgos and podencos who suffer in Spain.

  • Heartless Brits abandon their dogs in Spain

Los Infiernos refuge Tina Solera 300 Galgo News is chiefly about the plight of the galgos and podencos, in Spain and the Spanish Islands. However, being a Libran, I am not averse to speaking out about the heartless Brits who are leaving Spain and their dogs behind – and there are some in France who do the same.

Linda, from Los Infiernos shelter in Murcia, explains.

‘I help at the same refuge as Tina, who has been appealing for help to rehome the galgos abandoned by the hunters. The Brits don’t bring their dogs to our refuge at the moment; the dogs are found abandoned and then brought to us by the police. I will tell you a few of the cases I have encountered.

  • Meet Miracle Moxie May – a podenca who survived Spain against the odds

Moxie May 2 Meryl Marsh 04 2010 250 Meryl Marsh is passionate about her podenca. Here is the moving story of Moxie May, another of the survivors of the canine hell of Spain.

‘I am from the U.S. and live most of the year in Belgium because my boyfriend works here. Last spring I started researching adoption agencies on the Internet and learned that there are several in Belgium that place dogs from Spain, this lead to me learning about what a sad, desperate situation many dogs face in Spain. Before that, I had no idea.

Every country has its issues with animal cruelty, but I was really shocked to learn how bad Spain is with the hunting practices and such.

  • Spanish Hunting Federations – information needed

This is a list of some of the hunting federations in Spain. Contact with them is largely only by email. I have searched the websites for contact names and addresses, but not found any for these. Can anyone in the areas supply me with the information, please?

  • Baas Galgo – help towards the cost of the 90 galgos dumped at the shelter

Baas galgo poster appeal 04 2010 230 Remember the story of the 90 galgos dumped at the Villa del Rio shelter in Cordoba at the end of January? Leticia at the shelter, and Sandra Baas of Baas Galgo have been working hard to care for the galgos and rehome them. There are now 70 galgos still at the shelter and Baas Galgo are appealing for donations to pay for food etc for these galgos.

If these dogs are still in the shelter in August/September, any bets the galgueros will be back to get them for the next hunting season?!

Watch Galgo News this week, as I’m working on preparing a campaign about this! In the meantime, if you can help Baas Galgo, donate here.

  • 3 galgas in Murcia, Spain, looking for forever homes – can you adopt one?

Tina Solera Guapita 03 2010 250 After the story of the blind galga touched so many hearts, here are updates on the other 3 galgas at Los Infiernos shelter in Murcia, where Tina is a volunteer. Here’s a reminder of Sandy, Lali and Guapita.

Guapita is approx 2 years old. Her beauty took my breath away and when I was told she had been sleeping rough on the road outside my friend’s house I could not rest until I caught her. She is extremely shy but has a hidden spirit where I can see she is waiting to burst out and show her true potential.
