Jerez perrera, Cadiz – 15 galgos dumped for killing, at least one of them heavily in pup, all of them terrified, wondering what they have done wrong to be in such a place. And it’s only June since Pro-Galgo took some galgos from death row in Jerez, for rehoming! If anyone can help, contact Maribel urgently maribeljerezsos2@gmail.com

Spanish Galgos Ulises, Maisey, Luna from El Paraiso – please donate to vet fees
More abandoned and rescued galgos……from the perrera, from the countryside, urbanizations……….they are being abandoned everywhere, and it is only November – still the middle of the Spanish hunting season! One of the galgas rescued from El Paraiso could be pregnant, so an urgent spaying operation has now been carried out. And Maisey, an abandoned injured galga – sadly her leg could not be saved, so she is yet another one with an amputation. And the vet fees need paying!
Ulises was a galgo who had been living rough for months, no one could get near him. Eventually he was so ill he could be caught. He has leishmania, ehrlichia, rickets, a skin condition, but he is a fighter, as are the other two…..he wants to live and experience a forever home.

El Paraiso Galgos – please help!
The news is bad…..these 14 galgos will be euthanaised any day now! The associations who were supposed to be taking some haven’t turned up! Charl del Rio is heading there now to collect a couple but she can’t take more – can’t anyone out there help. I know the refuges and shelters are full to bursting, but please can’t someone get the galgos out? And I know, there will be dozens of other needy dogs in there, on death row. But on GN it’s the galgos and podencos we want to save. Other associations are there to take care of rescuing other breeds. And my heart bleeds for all the mixed breed dogs who don’t stand any chance of being saved.
Please, someone help these galgos. Contact Charl del Rio Vera T R
UPDATE 27 11 2010
I now know that 8 of these galgos have been rescued from being killed, unconfirmed that possibly all of them have been.

Canicross in Murcia – Tina and galgo Guapo over the finishing line!
Tina’s done it – she’s run her first Canicross today. Here’s what she says.
‘We have done the canicross. We had a great day although was almost a non starter for us when the race organisers thought it was a good idea to let off a few cannons……. yep, clever stuff as the dogs went crazy and Guapo pulled me over on a bank he was so scared and then spent 1/2hr shivering. Well we got to the start line and once we were off, he really enjoyed it. We came 12th overall but not sure out of how many, I will wait for results! Thanks for all the sponsors!

Target the War Hero, support his memory, sign the petition
Target was a war hero in Afghanistan, who saved the lives of 50 American soldiers. He ended up in a US animal refuge and was euthanaised! Please sign the petition demanding more regulations on animal refuges and shelters.

Abandoned and dying in Murcia – help save him – donate to vet fees
Tina Solera has been out catching a galgo again! Seems to be every day there is an abandoned galgo which crosses her path, even 2! And it’s not even near the end of the hunting season. What is wrong, what is happening that all these abandoned galgos are still being found?
This one was in a very poor state; Tina took advice from other experienced volunteers and finally managed to catch him and take him to her vet. (Bear in mind she has young school age children to see to whilst saving galgos!) This is what she says.

Galgo Guapo runs the Canicross in Murcia – please sponsor him!
Plea for sponsorship. Regular readers will know Tina Solera is another amazing volunteer working in Murcia to save abandoned and injured galgos, as well as helping at Los Infiernos refuge. Tina and her galgo Guapo are in training for the Canicross. Here’s what Tina says about it.
‘Its a 5km sprint on the 21 Nov and Guapo is the first ever galgo to run in this canicross race in this area, possibly all over Spain, although the secretary was not 100% sure about other parts of Spain. For Guapo and me, it is more about publicity for galgos than anything else but if we can kick some dalmation and huskie arses along the way, that will be great. Just hoping the ankle will hold up after twisting it the other day but so far so good. I am so excited…. Guapo, the first galgo to run it, let’s hope we can raise some eyebrows and change a few peoples’opinions about galgos, as well as raising money to pay for microchipping, vaccinating and sterilizing the galgos I rescue.’

Holiday in Spain 2011? Walk with and for the animals on El Camino
Here’s a marvellous idea for your holiday next year, and it will help the animals. You can spend just one week on the walk, or longer, even the whole 6 weeks if you are fit! I publicised the previous walk, which was just with the dogs, this time they are taking horses and donkeys.
‘Dear Friends,
We have already overcome the worst summer heat here in Andalucía and preparations for the Camino 2011 have begun! Reserve your place now, as there are only 15 spaces available per week, for people and dogs, donkeys, horses …
The main aim of our pilgrimage continues to be raising awareness of the plight of animals and their need for protection. This is something which affects us all, because it is part of a wider, global attempt to preserve this planet as a worthy habitat for all the species.

Sponsor a dog on Lanzarote, Tenerife, Ibiza – the best Christmas present!
It’s easy to overlook the problem for the abandoned dogs on the Spanish Islands, and so here’s a reminder of some of the associations who work extremely hard to save, care for and rehome these deserving animals. Podencos especially have a very hard life and their only hope of a future is off the islands on mainland Europe.
With Christmas coming up, why not think about Sponsoring a Dog. Here are links to the associations on Tenerife, Lanzarote and Ibiza who really need your help.
