  • Calling Volunteers in Cordoba/Seville

GALGA ALFONSO 1 250 This is a plea for help, from a guy who lives with his parents and has a young galga hidden at home. He lives in a village, he has no car, there is no vet, but it looks like she has a broken paw. At this rate he will have to put her back on the street. This is his message.

I’m Alfonso, a guy from Cordoba. Tuesday night last week while walking my dog, we saw a lump of white on the ground. When I got close, I saw she was a galgo or galga x. She was trying to hide, but she did not get far because she could not walk because her paw is hut. It was raiging, I could not look the other way, so I took her home.

  • More shelters needing help as Brits leave Spain and head back to the UK

With the exodus of Brits leaving Spain to return to the UK, it means that many shelters are now losing their volunteers, they have fewer fundraising events organised (Brits are really good at those) and fewer people supporting the events. There are also more dogs being taken to the shelters as the Brits can’t take dogs into rented accommodation in the UK.

GRIN has some pleas from the shelters which especially deal with the adorable podencos, as well as other types of dog.

  • El Refugio, north of Madrid – over 200 dogs need your help

El Refugio north of Madrid - Tina Solera 1209 300 Tina Solera is one of the British volunteers working in northern Spain helping abandoned dogs, especially galgos. She told me about a refuge in the mountains north of Madrid, El Refugio. It has over 200 dogs at the moment – and the hunting season hasn’t yet finished! This link takes you to the information of how you can help them, if you live in the same area.

Besides needing donations to pay for dog food, veterinary care, etc. they also have a range of T shirts and Sweatshirts at unbelievable prices!

  • Latest Update on Van Gogh – maltreated galgo puppy saved by SOS Galgos

Van Gough - puppy with cut ears 1209 210 This is the message received today from Anna, at SOS Galgos.

Our foster volunteer Patricia and our main person in Zaragoza , Juan Carlos, yesterday morning decided to get up and drive to Ciudad Real from Zaragoza to go and get their two galgos they were waiting to foster. Due to the recent bad weather, the MRW messenger service hasn’t been working and they didn’t want another day for the service to start work.

So they drove 6 hours there and six hours back to get the galgos that had been patiently waiting in a kennel in the cold. While there, they decided to take the little one with the cut ears (his name is Van Gogh) back since he hadn’t been able to travel up to Barcelona as planned because of the bad weather so they are going to send him to us on Monday from Zaragoza instead, where the service will be more reliable. We are so happy that he is going to spend Christmas in Patricia’s warm home.

“Next wednesday 30 dec. we are going to Barcelona to collect the maltreated puppy.
He is now on his way from Ciudad Real to Barcelona where he is staying for one week
    at a fostering home.

    Greetings ,
    Loes”

  • Coping with Snow in Animal Refuges in Spain – Very Hard Work

Arca de Noe 1209 250 Snow arrived in France yesterday. It’s fine for the Pyrenees for skiing, but no good for keeping animals. Frozen water pipes, frozen water buckets, grass under snow…..

But for the Arca de Noé refuge in Albacete in Spain, it is even worse. This picture is of the refuge in summer. See what they are coping with, along with many other northern Spanish refuges and shelters. Look at the depth of snow, plus frozen water pipes, snow in the dog runs….I can’t begin to imagine what they cope with. The volunteers are absolute angels.

    See more pictures…..
