22 January 2012 – as I write a rescue is being carried out in Murcia. Up to 70 galgos in a gypsy camp. The gitano (Spanish gypsy) with these dogs was denounced (see my book to explain a denuncia) and the authorities said the dogs would all be put down unless they were rescued. These dogs are in poor condition, some chained to walls….the gypsies are very hard on the galgos. Several people belonging to rescue associations and refuges are involved in this operation.
The dogs will all need examining by a vet, microchipping and blood tests for leishmania, ehrlichia and filaria – it is likely many of them will be suffering from these diseases. They will then need treatment, vaccinating, sterlising, and finally rehoming. Food will also be expensive.
As yet we only know of two of associations and shelters who are involved in this rescue. If you wish to donate towards the vet fees, I suggest you wait until we know all the associations/refuges involved so that donations can be spread between them all.
If you want to make a protest about situations like this, please join my current letter -writing campaign. Send a letter to the Federation Espanola de Galgos to demand they stop the annual holocaust.
Gitanos, Spanish gypsies, can be extremely ruthless; even the Guardia Civil have been known to be reluctant to enter some camps. The gitanos breed galgos and sell them to hunters; they steal galgos from refuges and shelters to sell to hunters; they steal adopted galgos and then try and sell them back to the owner, claiming to have ‘found’ the dog. It is not recommended to enter these camps unless you are one of a group and, even then, it can be dangerous.
These galgos can be rescued because they have been cleared by the authorities for moving.
I would like to add here that not all gypsies are involved in the dark side of Spanish hunting with galgos. There are others who love and care for their dogs. But as always it is the bad ones which are notorious.

As far as I know and we were there all day it was Galgos del Sol, La Fortelaza and one other lady whom I asked her name and where she was but then she got distracted and in the end forgot to pick up the conversation again. If people would like to donate to GdS or La Fortelaza please feel free as we are up against a time limit to get out the other 45. Silvia from Galgoconnectionspain has offered to take 3 but we need money for transport to send them. So far GdS have taken 9 ill galgos with bed sores, swollen joints and extremely thin, costing us approx 2000 euros in total (minimum) we as do the other protectora La fortelaza welcome any help! If Silvia takes 3 then she will also need support. If any other protectoras get involved that I hear about then I will let you know but at the moment today was the first day and it was just the 3 of us. Many Thanks. Tina Galgos del Sol

Incredible work. What would the dogs do
without you, Tina. This is what you do best; being there when appeals come
in, when galgos and pods need rescuing and caring for. You are their
guardian angel and I cant think what would happen if you were not there for
them. It must be a tremendous emotional and physical strain on you.
Please be careful.
Will look tomorrow for website of La Fortelaza for
donations to be sent, I already know Silvias.
And here I am in France, with a building which
would easily house them all. But Im not a charity, not a refuge, simply
one person – I think were limited legally to 9 dogs in one household.
Very frustrating.
And the problem is that the refuges are all
overflowing.
Curses on the gitanos and the bloody
galgueros.

Just a comment, but wouldnt it be better to save
the ones who seem in the best condition, as they could be the ones easiest to
rehome, and costing less in vet fees. I know its difficult to tell, they
may turn out to have leishmania, filaria, ehrlichia. Truth to tell, would
I have the courage to choose? Like you, Id want to take them all.
Be strong.

Sorry, how rude of me. Andreas Animal Rescue and The Henrietta Foundation were also there in support of GdS. They kindly are fostering 4 galgos for us with them in their home. Although I very much considered them part of the GdS team today they are of course a wonderful Donkey charity who will feed and look after 4 of our galgos. We will fund the vets bills and re-home them but a donation to them for food would also be a great help to them. Thank you Andrea….
Beryl, i just walked into a room and said i’ll take that lot. It was a room with no food or water, no daylight and the galgos were looking dangerously thin. I have sent you photos via email. May I just say the man who owned the galgos was extremely co-operative and appreciative. I know this isnt going to help the situation but at least we didnt feel threatened or in danger. I don’t know what else to say…. its a different way of thinking to what we think!

You are their guardian angel – and the gitano had
to co-operate because the authorities were making him. As I said, I have
the building into which I could take them all…and a vet experienced with
galgos and podencos and Spanish mediterranean diseases – just so sorry I cant
take them. I have an almost perfect set up. And meadows to walk them
in……and enclosed areas for them to run in………… you are
rescuing, I am frustrated in France!

you have come to them galgos rescue in their hour of need all the expence and fight to get them back to health you are fab people
what is the guardia civil beryl is it the police
Hi Jen Guardia Civil is the Spanish police, and Seprona is the department of the Guardia Civil which is responsible for animal welfare and the environment in Spain.
Why aren’t these abusers prosecuted?

Sadly, the Spanish political and judiciary system
is full of galgueros, Spanish hunters. The systems are also corrupt.
Put the two together – they look after each other. This particular man
co-operated with the rescue associations when he was reported, but Seprona let
him keep some dogs, he hid others….so it goes on. Sickening.
Thanks for commenting and caring.
